Rare Pictures of First Miss India Pramila (Images)

The saga of independent India's first-ever beauty queen came to a close on August 6, when Esther Abraham, screen name Pramila, faded into an eternal dissolve.

A born rebel, she walked out of her conservative Baghdadi Jewish home in Kolkata at 17 to join a theatre company. She went on to realise her real dream and blazed across the Indian screen as a vamp and a fearless stunt star in 30 films, including Ulti Ganga, Bijli, Basant and Jungle King. She became the first major woman film producer, with 16 films under her Silver Productions banner.

D M Madhok wrote Choli Ke Andar lyrics for her years before Madhuri Dixit was born and then Bombay chief minister Morarji Desai had her wrongly arrested as a Pakistani spy because of her visits to that country to distribute films.
In a big bad man's world, she wore the pants and led an interesting personal life. As a teenager, she eloped with Marwari theatre director Manicklal Dangi. She later married actor Kumar (who appeared in Mughal-e-Azam and Shri 420) before settling down to live with Parsi filmmaker Nari Gadhali for four decades after Kumar migrated to Pakistan in 1963.

In those four decades, she shunned the limelight, brought up her four sons and a daughter and waged a colossal battle to get back her property in Mumbai's Shivaji Park area from the clutches of creditors and authorities.

With a whirlwind life like that, even the most stout-hearted scriptwriter would hesitate to pen her biopic. Her youngest son actor Hyder Ali of television series Nukkad-fame pays a very personal tribute here:

My ma may be known for dash and feisty spirit but it did not come up only when she was cornered. It was her trait. It appeared in everything she did.

I asked her what is was about her that Amol Palekar wanted her to act in his Marathi film, Thang, at 90. How do you manage to be the centre of attraction even now, I asked her.

She said, 'Haidoo, you have to command what you want. If you do not get it, demand it. If you still don't get it, grab it. If you still do not get it you to kill to get it. If you worry about what the world thinks, you will waver from your goal.'

She was like that. She never cared too hoots if the world was shocked, embarrassed... right from the day she walked out of her house.

She hurt people in the process but she was able to compensate because she succeeded financially. She never took from people, she only gave. Throughout, she remained economically independent and died as a landlady.

Charting your own independent path was easier said than done. When she wanted to emulate the success of her cousin in Bollywood as a Kolkata teenager, she joined a Parsi travelling theatre company.

Her job was to keep the audiences quiet with her charms during the 15 minutes it took to change reels in the single-projector silent film. You can imagine the courage and conviction it took for someone, who had been a kindergarden headmistress and had pre-university art certificates from London.

Her orthodox father clobbered her for that but she did not care.

Her spirit showed again when our father left for Pakistan, leaving us in debt. Our family building had been mortgaged for Rs 1 lakh (easily equivalent to crores of rupees today). Some of its flats had been requisitioned by the government. Unlike other film people, she gave up all trappings of stardom, travelled in public buses to fight court battles. She juggled her film finances to ward off auctions on two occasions and a civic injuction on another.

She wanted all of us to join cinema. Only I stand devoted to it. My siblings said it is too irregular a profession. My mom said, all life is irregular. That was her message to us. Never give up. You have keep trying and trying all the time till your last breath and the opportunity will creat
e itself.

Hilary Duff: Young Hot Hollywood 2009 - Maxim Photo Shoot

Hilary Duff has scored four multiplatinum discs, starred in a few box office hits and had a major merchandising enterprise spring out of her star-making Lizzie McGuire TV series. Hilary Duff is the cover girl of Young Hot Hollywood special edition of Maxim Magazine January 2009 issue. Here is the interview highlights.

On her image makeover for ´Reach Out´:
I was ready to do something different. The intent was not to be overtly sexual; I´m not naked. I do have little shorts on in it - but I also wear giant tutu. It´s good to show different sides of yourself.

On changing hair color:
I love changing my look and my image. I found that people treated me differently with dark hair, so I kept it for a while. It´s great to explore being different people. Blondes definitely get treated in a more protective way.

On her new movie choices: I see an acting career lasting longer in my life than a singing career. I´ve been thinking of the long term. Greta is an indic picture, which I love. The character´s obsessed with suicide. She´s funny and artistic and impossible not to like. I felt like I related to her exactly - minus the suicide part. In Safety Glass I got to work with Steve Coogan, who is so interesting. Guys like John Cusack and Coogan are just so smart, so cool - I had crushes on both of them. Oh, and Stay Cool is really funny. I got to play this girl trying to seduce this older guy - so fun to do.

On earning $ 15 millions anually: Every year´s different. But I´ve had good years like that.
On being single: I´m a relationship person. Now it´s all over the Internet that I´m getting engaged to my boyfriend. The truth is, I just like to wear rings.
On the worst thing ever written about her: I´ve been accused by the press of giving lap dances at clubs. I mean, little ol´ me? It´s shocking. People love to believe it - it´s way more exciting to talk about than the truth. And they´re so descriptive about these lap dances. I don´t even know how to do a lap dance.

Italy's sexiest sports presenter to interview Beckham (Images)

There are suggestions that the Beckham camp turned down sexy Italian sports presenter Ilaria D'Amico's request to interview David on his arrival in Milan

Veteran: Ilaria D'Amico, who has been fronting sports shows since 1997, will interview Beckham at a press conference instead of exclusively
Popular: Ilaria D'Amico

Veto: An Italian newspaper claims the interview was stopped because of Victoria's jealousy

As a lover of fashion, Victoria Beckham was probably right behind her husband David's decision to sign for AC Milan in Italy's couture capital.

She may not be too pleased, however, to learn that one of the journalists lining up to interview him about the latest twist to his career is the glamorous IIaria D'Amico.

There have even been suggestions that the Beckham camp turned down an exclusive 'one-to-one' with the reporter because of her looks.

Indeed the former England captain is holding an open press conference on his arrival in Milan rather than the exclusive interview requested by Miss D'Amico's bosses at Sky Sports.

Miss D'Amico, a 35-year-old graduate, got her big break at the 1998 World Cup and has a huge following among Italian football fans.

Her interview with Beckham will be screened as part of a documentary profiling the 33-year-old.

A spokesman for the footballer said last night: 'Ilaria D'Amico will still be doing an interview with David.

'Originally Sky wanted to do an exclusive interview but we felt the press conference should be open to everyone and wouldn't want to restrict it to one broadcaster.

'He will do a separate interview with Sky afterwards. It's rubbish to suggest we would veto a presenter because of her looks.'

Beckham has signed for AC Milan on a three-month loan deal from his U.S. club, LA Galaxy.

The Beckhams are to be given a welcome tour of the city by their fashion designer friends, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana. The couple are said to have been given the £1,000-a-night penthouse suite at the exclusive Chedi Hotel near AC's San Siro stadium.

Beckham is hoping the move will help him keep in shape and earn him a call up to Fabio Capello's England squad during his Californian side's close season.

He needs only one more cap to equal Bobby Moore's record for an England outfield player of 108.

Beckham will begin training with his Milan teammates on December 29 and could be in line to play his first game on January 11.

The good news for his 34-year-old wife is that Miss D'Amico is dating an Italian film director. Two years ago she was linked to Alesandro Moggi, the son of Juventus football club president Luciano.

Earlier this month she won popular acclaim by urging her fellow Italians to oppose a television tax proposed by prime minister Silvio Berlusconi.
